- Ed Murphy - dodging the recent snows and freezing conditions Ed took his first step to his PPL with a First Solo in G-BIJV on Saturday the 11th February 2012.

- Note from our CFI - Ivan Hart - On 11th Feb 1972 I went solo for the first time in a Chipmunk T10 at Plymouth Airport while carrying out flying grading with the Britannia Royal Naval Collage Flight. 40 years later I met up with WX 608 again at RNAS Yeovilton where she is part of the RN Historic Aircraft Flight helping todays RN pilots learn how to fly a tail dragger. On the 11th Feb 2012 my student Eddie Murphy went solo for the first time, released by Joe Cunningham. Sorry I was not there to see it but I hope you have as much fun as I have had during the last 40 years. Ivan
- Andrew Russell - Arriving at the Club for his usual lesson Andrew took full advantage of a lovely January day and went on to do his First Solo. At the age of 16, and with his anxious family watching, he completed the detail without fault on Wednesday 11th January 2012. Congratulations Andrew.

FREE OLYMPICS 1:500,000 VFR CHARTS AVAILABLE IN 2012
A detailed 1:500,000 VFR chart of the London 2012 Olympics airspace restrictions and changes will be given away free to pilots who purchase the new 1:500,000 VFR chart for South East England, due to be published on 8 March 2012.
The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said it had reached an agreement with NATS Aeronautical Information Service, which publishes all UK airspace charts, to provide complimentary copies of the Olympics chart for anyone who buys the regular VFR chart for South East England. This initiative is jointly funded by the CAA, NATS and the Department for Transport.
Also, the official latitudes and longitudes for the temporary airspace restrictions around London and Weymouth put in place for the duration of London 2012, can now be downloaded at http://www.airspacesafety.com/olympics The restrictions to be put in place for the other venues will be published in early 2012.

A new aviation safety podcast is launched today by the CAA in conjunction with the Flaps team.
Known as Airspace the podcast is part of the Airspace & Safety initiative (ASI) work to inform the aviation community of changes from next year’s London 2012 Olympics, but will also feature other safety and airspace issues.
It can be heard or downloaded here: www.soundcloud.com/flapspodcast/caa-airspace
Among the issues covered in this podcast are: how the restrictions will be put in place; how to use the restricted zone; and, details of the enhanced air traffic service that will be in place to assist pilots.
Further Airspace podcasts will follow later this year as part of the ASI Olympics programme and will feature topics including how to use the enhanced flight planning system for the restricted zone and what to do if you’re intercepted by a military aircraft during the Games.

The JAR PPL - still being OVERLOOKED!
There has been a further reminder from the CAA (13th December 2010) that your JAR PPL must renewed every 5 years. Also every 2 years you must have the Certificate of Revalidation in your licence signed by an examiner, John or Bob at LAC.
If your licence has expired you must take a skills test before it can be signed by an examiner. If your licence is coming up for revalidation you can avoid a skills test by completing 12 hours flight time in the last 12 months before the expiry date, of which a minimum of 6 hours must be solo and have completed a biennial check with an instructor.
The renewal form, certificate and log book must be presented to an examiner for signing before the expiry date on the Certificate of Revalidation.
When signing for the aircraft at LAC you sign to say that you have a valid Certificate of Revalidation and a current medical. Failure to ensure that these 2 items are valid could have serious insurance implications in the event of an accident, not to mention problems with the CAA.

Cessna Pilots
On a routine inspection of one of the Club Cessnas one of the tyres has been badly worn.
Pilots have been seen to demonstrate their parking prowess by pirouetting the AC on one wheel into the albeit tight parking spaces next to the fence.
You are therefore requested to stop short of the parking bays and push there aircraft back when there is insufficient space to park without turning the AC on it’s brakes.
PLEASE - NO PIROUETTES
You will never look as good as this!

Staff changes
Many will already know the flying instructor Ivan Hart. Ivan has been CFI with the Club for several months and is now available for the full range of instruction, tests and RT examinations.
Those members who do not call in at weekends will not know Joe Cunningham. Joe’s other days are taken up as a “proper” teacher at an Eastbourne school.
Another weekend only OPS Staff Member is Lewis Harris. (Left in adj photo). Lewis is well on his way with the PPL Course although he still has the weekday problems of attending regular school.

An article from AOPA
Know what your PAX are up to
AOPA is advising GA pilots to take their own security seriously after becoming involved in cases in which pilots face having to carry the can for criminal behaviour by passengers.
One case involves a 62-year-old flying instructor with no criminal background who agreed to fly to France with an owner who was showing the aircraft to a would-be buyer.
They took him to Le Touquet for lunch but on the way back police were waiting for them; they allegedly found 13kg of heroin in the man’s bag. Martin Robinson says:
“There is evidence that some pilots are being set up in this way. It’s up to the pilot to be absolutely certain that everything is above board.
That means knowing what is in every bag on the plane. As the pilot you can’t afford to be squeamish about asking people what they’re carrying.
You may find it difficult to look in a passenger’s bag, but it’s a lot more difficult to do time. Your passengers will understand if you explain properly”
From your local AOPA representative Ivan Hart (CFI to LAC)

Bad weather? - Can’t contact Club?
Lydd Airport was closed for a few days during the worst of the snow and ice but is now fully operational
A number of members who recently intended flying, and others who had booked Trial Lessons, found it hard to believe when told that the airport was closed when their own areas were completely clear of snow.
PLEASE check in by telephoning the Club before leaving home during any bad weather but particularly during snow and other inclement weather.
The Club is normally open 7 days a week but IF CLOSED please contact via lyddaero@btconnect.com. IF the airport is closed due to bad weather emails to this address will be answered from the OPS staff home desks

Buying Fuel
Pilots using either Group or Club aircraft who need to buy fuel whilst away from Lydd are reminded that a proper invoice or receipt (showing VAT Reg. No. if in the UK) is required for the Club or the Group to re-claim that expense.
Credit/Debit Card receipts are not sufficient for pilots to be re-imbursed for such purchases.
