Saturday 25th and Monday 27th August
The trip to Leige was another ‘shall we, shall we not’ affair. In the end we decided to leave on the Friday, although the weather for Lydd was forecast to be better the following day.
As usual, Nigel and Bill were up front and those following were able to make use of their requests for climb until we all reached flight level 90, clear of cloud. I, for one, expected descent from Brussels, but no, we were all allowed to transit through their class B and C airspace.
Normally, there is little need to plan a descent but from that level we needed to ensure a gentle trip downwards. Brussels, of course, are used to this and at thirty miles we were told to descend to flight level 60 and contact Leige. The arrival was simple with a right hand downwind join for runway 23 left. The terminal is simple to exit and a cab into town around 30 euros.
The town itself is hilly, with numerous construction sites, but there are areas with charm and of course the River Meuse. Our choice of hotel (The Crowne Plaza) was superb and can be thoroughly recommended. The Saturday market is huge but not too varied and most of us spent the day sheltering from the rain. Had we tried to have come on the Saturday we would not have been able to land.
Both evening meals were good, but on the second evening we ate at a local bistro where the choice of wine and food nearly defeated our Bill!
The return flight was super and the total airport costs were only 37 euros.
